Project Plans Depot

The first project of the Bucyrus Preservation Society, hereafter called the BPS, was to acquire the former Bucyrus Toledo & Ohio Central passenger station, and grounds, from the Bucyrus Historical Society and restore the 111 year old station to its original regalia. The BPS has set into place an organization to operate the building and grounds as a destination station for many forms of transportation, and as an industrial museum and activities center. The activated railroad station, industrial museum and activities center will be operated by volunteers. It is the desire of BPS to complete the work in a four-year time frame.

What We Will Have

-We will save a building of special High Victorian Gothic architecture listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
-We will provide an active station and place of destination for both residents and visitors to our community.
-We will provide a Bucyrus Railroad Station at the crossroads of two rail lines, one where a train could stop to discharge and load passengers and goods, and provide facilities for comfort, need, and national defense.
-We will house an Industrial Museum for our area with displays, inside and out, highlighting transportation and products manfactured in the area..
-We will trace the history of our area on a series of panels with photographs, live sound and pictures, and memorabilia in tribute to our past and hope for the future generations.
-We will build an activity center available to the citizens and visitors of our community and name it in honor of those who went before us.
-The building will house a place for organizations to meet and will be open whenever a key-holder is scheduled.
-It will house the latest technology for large screen presentations along with videos of our past from a large in-house library.
-We will provide a walk-around platform with indoor and outdoor amenities that will entertain and comfort visitors as well as residents.
-A special fire-ring will entertain groups and hobo gatherings.
-We will work to beautify and restore dignity to the homes and businesses in the area.
-We will help the Bucyrus Historical Society, and other organizations preserve history, and plan community and cultural events.
-We will engrave the names of those who served the railroads, and our city, on bricks and plaques, displaying them in our walks and walls.
-We will honor historic events of people, places and things.

Phase One

Phase One of the restoration of the T&OC Depot will be to completely restore the existing station to the original integrity of which it was built. Through grants, individual contributions, and other forms of fund raising, this process will take aproximatly 3 years. We have enlisted the help of Mansfield Architect Tim Alexander, a large contingent of area craftsman, and a local group of students involved with the National Honor Society for gramt research. The Bucyrus Station Association, a daughter organization of the Bucyrus Preservation Society has over 100 volunteers that have already put in hundreds of hours of their time.

Phase Two

A building that once stood next to the station will be rebuilt with a façade resembling the original Division Managers Office, but with modern American Disabilities Act rest rooms and a different floor plan.

Phase Three

A third phase will include a patio with train radios, a play area, hobo fire ring and walk-around platform, with picnic style tables, and limestone ledge for seating built from the old NYC Freight House foundation stones. In addition a special project will be the location and placement of a passenger car on the west elevation of the old T&OC station. The car will have entrance at grade level between the two buildings to accommodate wheelchairs and the handicapped. The car will have dining style tables and chairs for meetings and catering. Passing trains will provide the illusion that one is actually riding on a train.
