BUCYRUS PRESERVATION SOCIETY PRESENTS:
HOBO DAYS & PEDDLERS MARKET
MAY 24th, 2008
Fun, food, entertainment, vendors and crafters
and visits with real hobos will welcome Bucyrus visitors on Hobo Day &
Peddlers Market 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 24 at the T&OC station, 700 E.
Rensselaer St.
Nationally known hobos are available in the “Hobo
Jungle” eagerly waiting to tell their stories, recite “readings” and
show items they make ranging from walking sticks to “Nickel” carvings.
According to Jim Croneis, the furthest contact this year is the hobo "KaBar"
from Houston, Texas. Several former Hobo Kings and Queens have visited
including the oldest traveling Hobo King, Grandpa Dudley, and his wife,
former Queen MAD Mary.
Hobos, known as “Hoe Boys” would travel the country,
especially after the Civil War, looking for work. They traveled with a
hoe and all their possessions tied in a bandanna called a “Bindle.” One
of the “camps” was located just north of the Norfolk Southern railroad
bridge on the Sandusky River bank. Many Bucyrians remember their
mother’s giving a hobo a meal for weeding their garden or some other
work.
Entertainment for the event is under the direction of
Arvine Kindinger, who has six venues for Hobo Day including singer
guitarist Matt Hoover, Bucyrus’ own Hobo Band, Bob Bellamy’s hammered
Dulcimer, “The Hatchback,” and “The Lesser Known Poets,” and individual
Hobo renditions. There is no admission charge.
The Bucyrus Station Association, the membership of the
Bucyrus Preservation Society, puts on the event twice each year,
Saturdays before Memorial Day and Labor Day, to showcase the work done
by volunteers on the 1892 T&OC railroad station. Half-hour guided
station tours will be hosted by member docents. The former “Little
Station” a former barbershop and house, relocated from Plymouth Street,
and now a gift shop will also be open. Antique automobiles, tractors,
and industrial equipment will be on display.
Hobo or period dress is always encouraged at the event.
Come on out to the T&OC station and enjoy the festivities!
Karen Scott, Peddler’s Market chairperson, said she has
plenty of food stands and has room for more vendors to rent spaces for
$15. All proceeds go to the station to purchase materials. Vendors can
call Karen at 419-562-1110.
