BUCYRUS PRESERVATION SOCIETY PRESENTS:
HOBO DAY & Peddlers Market, SEPT. 5th, 2009
Great entertainment, lots of great food, vendors and crafters, and real hobos will be on hand to welcome visitors to Hobo Day at the Station, a peddlers market at the T & OC Train Station, 700 E. Rensselaer St., Bucyrus, Ohio, Saturday, September 5th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Bucyrus Preservation Society is inviting vendors from the area to participate in this fund raising event for the restoration of the train station. Space fees start at $15.00 for a 10x10 area, and if you are a vendor and would like to participate, please contact Karen Scott at 419-562-1110 for more information.
The day will also include visits from the reigning Hobo King and Queen and other members of the Hobo Society, who will be on hand to entertain us with music and stories of their adventure across the country. They will be holding court in the Hobo Jungle located across from the Preservation Society Gift Shop
In addition to the vendors, a special display of old motorized railroad cars owned by Don Powers of Bucyrus will offer the visitors a chance to see the means of transportation the work crews used to work on the tracks many years ago. Arvine Kindinger, entertainment chairman, will have a full line up of music to entertain and amuse the visitors.
The Bucyrus Preservation Society saves remnants of the past and includes them in its restoration of the buildings. The Plymouth Street station’s bathroom floor is from the Crawford County Courthouse. The floor of that building is from the Lykens School gymnasium, and the floor of the T&OC Station is from the Bucyrus Middle School. The society’s docents will be on hand to further tell of the great improvements that have occurred over the winter, one of which is the addition of stair railing to the second floor of the station that was recycled from a home that was razed. .
The Bucyrus Preservation Society has had in place a “memorial brick” program which has allowed people in the community, and elsewhere, to purchase a brick to honor someone that has a railroad background, to honor a loved one, or to put the family name at a National Historic site. These bricks will be on display at Hobo Day, and someone will be there to take orders.
To help in the restoration process, the society would also welcome stories, photos and memorabilia from the community about the T& OC Station, about boarding the train here, and about the interior of the station. They also hope to recruit new members to help “Protect Our Past for the Future.” In lieu of the collection of dues, the association only asks for 20 hours of volunteer work at the station over the year.
There is no admission charge and the society is inviting the community to attend this event to see the station and the progress that has been made to restore it for use as a transportation and industry museum, plus enjoy the wonderful food and to visit with all of the vendors and the ‘bo’s. The Plymouth Street Station will also be open to the public. It holds the gift shop that train enthusiasts can find specialty items related to the railroad. For more information, contact Karen Scott at 419-562-1110.
